Client description: Thereabouts is a documentary about brothers Angus (former professional cyclist) and Lachlan Morton’s (professional cyclist) 1500+ mile ride from their hometown of Port Macquarie on the east coast of Australia to Uluru in the heart of the outback. Over the course of the frontier-type adventure, the brothers unpack some of their experiences with cycling while documenting the people and places they saw along the way. The movie questions the data-driven and formulaic world of competitive cycling and instead seeks to reconnect with the “magic” of riding a bike and choosing your own path.
Objective: Craft a package to hold a collector’s item, booklet, and DVD.
Solution: A set of collectors spoons mounted on a clay plaque, in a box with a booklet of photography and stories from the trip and the movie DVD.
Made with real silver!
Why Spoons?
Modeled after the two brothers, the collectors’ spoons are inspired by a running joke that Lachlan shares in the movie (watch him tell the story). When cycling collectors ask him for jerseys or gear, he tells them that he’s a collector of rare spoons and that he’ll send them whatever they’re asking for in return for spoons for his collection.
The Thereabouts 10th-anniversary spoons, inspired by Lachlan’s imaginary spoon collection and the film’s theme of forging your own path, are crafted in a folk style and cast in silver. These spoons, with their unique design and material, provoke a thoughtful reflection on the nature of collectables and their value.
